Edwards Street definitely needs at least one crosswalk; we used to live on Edwards across from Foster, and that intersection is very bad. Constant screeching tires, and saw several fender-benders, and there is a need for a safe way for pedestrians to cross there. I notified our Alderperson at the time (two years ago now), who told me she had informed the Dept. of Traffic and Safety of the need; I followed up, but didn't hear back. Improvement is needed on that street, definitely.

I recommend that the city not repaint the centerline on Edwards Street. The double yellow line is unnecessary (and totally ineffective at preventing passing, anyway) and makes the street look like a major arterial...which it is not.

A crosswalk with an in-road pedestrian sign is a great idea.

If you live near here and want more substantial traffic calming, you might consider writing a grant proposal for a neck-down, a traffic circle, a pedestrian refuge island, or curb extensions.

no highways in East Rock. Think in 5 years we will wonder why we made so much room for cars. Let the transformation proceed.

the speeding on edwards is horendous. city should change its standards to enable simple traffic calming. no need to spend thousands of bucks on a consultant to create a "pedestrian refuge island." just throw in some concrete barriers, some paint and some sod, and you have one BINGO. doing this all over the city would cost almost nothing and improve new haven's overall quality of life by double. at least. at the current rate of building fancy traffic islands like the ones in east shore, we'll have to wait until our grandkids are all grown up until streets look like what the community wants them to look like. lets be realistic about the budget for this stuiff and adapt standards so it meets what is needed.

agreed. i live here & it is a nightmare.
here's my scenario
i go to the WASHTUB on Foster to do my laundry
so i have to walk a block the wrong direction, to cross the street, then walk a block BACK.
all this to cross the street to go do my laundry

ridiculous when i live within site of the street the washtub is on
why isn't there a crosswalk there?
let's not worry about assigning blame (it's clear the city let us down on this one in the distant past) but let's hustle it up

it's cheap to paint a crosswalk,
and i'm personally willing to donate the funds

just to make this crystal clear

no, really. how has nothing been done here whatsoever? even a "yield to pedestrians in crosswalk" sign on its own would be helpful, though i'd prefer to see a painted crosswalk from both sides of livingston across edwards (where there are sidewalks that "connect" to the sidewalk from livingston, i might add). i cross here twice daily and have never once had a car even think about slowing down to allow pedestrians to cross. the end result is that a lot of people end up walking up edwards in their preferred direction and cross diagonally once the coast looks clear, which is more dangerous for everyone involved. what do we have to do to make this happen?

Architect Frank Chapman has come up with a brilliant and simple plan to slow the traffic on Edwards Street.

Though I didn't actually encounter them, I was glad to hear that folks were out at Lincoln/Trumbull (and elsewhere) to celebrate the re-installation of the in-road pedestrian signs now that spring (and what feels like summer) has finally arrived.

At least according to the Independent article about this, Transportation, Traffic, and Parking supposedly has funds for some additional signs. Any chance that this intersection could get one? I wouldn't want to take away from another potentially more dangerous spot that could use it more, but given the fairly high volume of pedestrians through here, I'd love to see an in-road sign.

A simple crosswalk would work: a circle ???? No way: not enough room. What a mess.
