Edgewood has 5 mutt mitt dispensers in the park. The cost is enormous; the cost per mutt mitt is 10 cents. Can't the users in Edgewood pay for their own mutt mitts? Why should taxpayers who do not have dogs pay for other people's ability to pick up behind their dogs? In fact, every park should have a fund for dog owners to contribute and pay for their own mutt mitts.
I appreciate your resentment about paying for mutt mitts out of your taxes. I highly doubt that the cost is really that great, but so be it. The city started providing the mitts, and therefore we have come to expect and appreciate the service.
I don't have children, never have, yet I pay for all kinds of services for children, including their education. I do not resent my contribution to that city service. Nor do I resent whatever part of my taxes goes to helping the homeless, the animal shelter, the 4th of July fireworks which I don't attend, etc.
There is a FREE way to pick up your dog's waste, that will not cost anything to the city or its taxpayers. Those of us who receive newspapers (New Haven Register, New York Times) find that the papers are always wrapped in plastic. I find these bags useful for many things, including disposing of stinky kitchen scraps (throw the onion scraps in the bag, tie it closed and your garbage won't stink, dispose of wet items such as tea bags so your garbage doesn't leak, etc). But if you receive the paper everyday, as I do, even though I reuse these bags, I still have a surplus. I will bring a bunch of these bags to my nearest Mutt Mitts dispenser, which is the park at Mitchell Library. I encourage others to do the same. Additionally, those with dogs who do not receive the newspaper via home delivery can always ask neighbors for their plastic newspaper bags and take them with you. Again - they tie closed easily and you can then dispose of the bags properly.
