I have also experienced a few near collisions there as well.

I have had MANY near misses waiting to turn left (East) on to Barksdale from south-bound Raleigh Blvd. North-bound drivers do expect to get in the turn lane for Baksdale and continue on to the left turn for Crabtree.

On occasion traffic turning left onto Crabtree extends into the left turning lane onto Barksdale from Raleigh Blvd. too. As a nearby resident I have experienced many near-misses and my current workaround is to have my left blinker flashing as soon as I cross Crabtree & to lay into my horn as soon as I see a vehicle veer left before the Barksdale turning lane.

I employ the exact method as Vanessa, for the exact same reason; people heading toward Crabtree Boulevard constantly try to "cheat" the turn markings and get over too early. Very dangerous.

In addition to the confusing turn lanes, the greenway crossing at one of the intersections, so often bikers and walkers are in the mix. I agree that this area should be evaluated.

I'd love to know the current status of this concern. The week after I posted this, there were at least 2 separate accidents that I witnessed at this intersection. Is a specific department following up on this? Thanks!

Well I had an SUV drive thru both the turning lanes for the Barksdale left turns this afternoon, so I had to stop in the left lane of Raleigh Blvd. until it passed. Any progress towards a solution here?

Yet again, today, on a slow and rainy Sunday morning my husband in his bright red truck with my 18 month old son in tow, were nearly hit head-on by an old beat up black Honda sedan when the driver decided to ride both turning lanes for Barksdale.

The best solution for the majority might be to put signage up making left turns illegal. Just a thought.

Turn lanes are too short in both directions. Definitely need fresh lines on the pavement. I avoid driving this way due to the above issues, but I am able to.

I am not sure what the best course of action is in this situation. I do believe there are a number of ways to address the situation that would be much better than leaving things as they are. In my 13 years of living in the Barksdale/Rumson area I have lost count of the number of times that I have been in the turn lane and another driver was very surprised to see me in said turn lane to turn on to Barksdale.

Another issued caused by this situation is that sometimes you actually have to stop in the left hand lane of Raleigh Blvd to allow someone who is in the wrong turn lane to proceed as to not become involved in an accident. Of course doing so sets you up for the possibility of another accident.

Over the years however I have come to believe more and more that it is not always confusion leading up to these incidents. In my opinion a fair number of times it is a driver who is wanting to turn left on to Crabtree and they disregard that the first turn lane if for Barksdale.

An update has been requested from the Public Works Department.

The Public Works Departmetn has provided this response. The city has been working on this issue with NCDOT because this road is maintained by NCDOT. We are hoping to come up with a permanent solution.

So why is this closed if it hasn't yet been fixed?

The road is maintained by the NCDOT. NCDOT does not participate in SeeClickFix. Closing issue on the City of Raleigh SeeClickFix site.

Is there a contact for NCDOT that the public can communicate with regarding this issue since CoR is keeping this issue closed?

It would be helpful for my neighbors that live with this unresolved public safety issue to have some information regarding the progress and development towards a solution as well, considering the four months of silence that passed since this complaint was initiated.

I took it upon myself yesterday to find contact information for some one with NCDOT instead of waiting on a response from the city on this. You can use either the form located at https://apps.dot.state.nc.us/ContactUS/PostComment.aspx?Unit=Division_5 or you can call 1.877.368.4968 and speak to some one there. I was given the number the local DOT office that handles Wake County. Unfortunately that number is on my desk at work. I have left a message with an engineer asking him to call me back to discuss what is necessary to start the ball rolling on addressing this issue. I was waiting to hear back from said engineer to see what he had to say before following up on this issue.

By the way it took less that 30 seconds on google and a two to three minutes on the phone to find out who I needed to talk to discuss this issue with.

Yep, GIYF. I found the NCDOT Wake county general contact info several days ago when I initially re-opened this issue.

However an informed contact that CoR's PW is reportedly collaborating with maybe far more informative and less prone to wheel reinventing than a general contact cold call too. Plus I'd just like to know the chain of command on this solution development given the months long drag this issue has already accrued…

There is not much we can do with regard to compelling NCDOT to take action. Our Public Works staff is in contact with NCDOT regarding this issue. NCDOT, again, does not monitor or participate on Raleigh's SeeClickFix. There is little value in repeatedly reopening an issue that Raleigh does not control. I am closing the SCF report, since the City has passed this along and does not control the timing or the eventual solution that NCDOT will take. Thanks for your understanding.
