Traffic Engineering will go out during that time when school is back in session and see if there is something we can do within the roadway, we may also need to coordinate with the school to see if there are on-site changes that may help.

It has almost caused me to rear end a car that was parked in the turn lane. People that have no placards park in handicap spaces. Why is this not a big deal? I would imagine that I would get a ticket if I were parked in a turn lane or a handicapped spot. Do those that park there, as a student pick up location, have different rights than those that want to go to the park to use it?

The quick easy fix is to have a traffic officer there to write tickets. They wouldn't even need a police car, as the police officer could just stand there and write tickets the whole time. After a few days of ticket writing, it would stop.

Most schools have taken this issue on by putting one of the school's staff out there to keep flow of traffic. A Security Guard perhaps. Kids are great, parents not so much. You can tell them no stop in that zone and they will say, "I know" and turn there head away and ignore everything till they see their kid coming.

Has there been any discussion to resolving this? They are still there, parking however and wherever they want with no regard for those who want to park to go to the park....

We have reviewed the public roadway side and with the improvements made with the restriping have increased the capacity of vehicle flow into the parking lot, the limiting factor is where/how vehicles are staging once they get into the lot.

I'm trying to schedule a meeting with the school district and principal to hopefully create a drop off/pick up plan that will reduce the impacts to traffic on Oakwood and park users.

Jesse Bethel’s parking lot was created so that cars picking up children could drive thru and around easily. Parents don’t want to enter the school parking lot, probably due to it taking a long time to get out, so instead they endanger their children’s and other people’s lives by parking in the turn lane, filling up the wardlaw park parking lot, and parking in the right lane of redwood parkway just east of ascot. They are typically accompanied by two or three ice cream trucks, also parked in the middle of the street. They even park on the other side of redwood and their kids run across the street to meet them. Redwood is a 4 lane parkway with a speed limit of 40 miles per hour. Why is this behavior allowed to continue? It is dangerous for the kids and us drivers through there. PLEASE HELP!

If the folks picking up their children would just behave and act courteous while driving it might work. Instead you have single minded parents focused on one thing - picking up their child, not anybody else’s, not anybody else’s car or where anybody else needs to be. It’s all about ME, ME and my other friend ME. Personally I would dread having to navigate that five days a week.

I have requested some help from PD to provide some presence to help driver behavior.

Please also ask the traffic division to address the illegal u-turn issue that is now out of control at Redwood and Rocky Shore. An officer parked there twice a day 7:30-8:10 and 2:15-3, for just a couple of days and then randomly after, and issuing tickets, will change driver behavior almost immediately.
