Monitoring the sewage leak has revealed that it is most apparent when the pool is open three months during the summer. Secondly, the corner of Church and Mulberry is in the Village purview, not the Town Highway Department. Why the Village of New Paltz does not get notified as a matter of course is now a problem too. County Health Department should be notified.

The leakage has frozen today, cracking the macadam of both Church Street and Mulberry Street c Come the Spring thaw, when the water starts to flow again, when it will drain into a cesspool on the south-west corner of Mulberry and Church. That brings mosquitos, the deadliest living creature in the world, to spread disease and death.

As of February 14, the area of seepage is covered by a snow bank. Checking Village government agendas via internet since first this issue appeared,here to see if the sewage leak is mentioned.

Not fixed yet.

Sunday night, March 4, 2011 , overflowing raw sewage at Brodhead and the Rail Trail from the manhole across from Deyo Hall Gravel Parkinglot. Both the manhole at Church and Mulberry Street and the manhole at Broadhead west of the Rail Trail are on the same line. Only part of that line has been repaired, the Brodhead Street manhole and line. Have photos of both.

Spring thaw has revealed seepage of drainage waters straight out of the macadam, directly into the cesspool on the corner, which never rises high enough to drain into the sewer grating that i have ever seen. It needs to be pumped out by the fire department or a portable outhouse company with a private contract. Prospect street was recently scarred with a new sewer pipe connector for one house that was recently purchased by a naive buyer who didn't get consultation about the condition of the sewer pipes right outside his house. The street that this leak is on hasn't had a proper sewer pipe installed since 1970, and that was before the public pool was put in.

Still leaking after all these years, right next to a cesspool no less, a pond with no natural outlet and a concrete drain to the sewer line too far above the water line. Deadly insect breeding swale that the fire department should pump dry on a steady basis to at least get rid of the sewer gas odor and smell.

Today, Sunday, May 29, 2011, at 4:42pm, I went and peered through the grating of the manhole on the SW corner of Mulberry and Church Streets. There is a six foot deep, 2 foot wide "plug" of mud, dirt, feces, urine, and cotton items that has made all surface ground water coast down the street and back flow into the clogged up cesspool surrounded by a lovely wooden fence on the corner. Mind you, this corner of the world is in the village but the park it is adjacent to is owned by the town and village, a singular item in New Paltz. Because the problem is being made by both governmental entities, neither can act. Thank you.

Nobody has unstopped the plug yet, so all the rain water, sewer water and water table rising waters are caring a sea of germs across Mulberry Street into the street where the college students play ball. Mosquitoes are breeding in a stagnant pond in the midst of a parking lot and no pumper truck, private or public, comes to such out the West Nile virus and the skeeters. New Paltz needs more bats.

The problem has worsened with soap suds and foam coming out of the sewer grating now. Yesterday, a whole stream of it formed a 20 foot by 20 foot lake in the middle of Mulberry Street because the cesspool on the corner has soaked the ground and there is no natural outlet for the water to flow out by. Mosquitoes fill the air, bull frogs sing in the cattails at night, and the dirt and toxins mix in an unholy stew beneath the traffic signs which read "Watch For Children" in the park.

Not only is the sewer line still crumbling and leaking raw sewage, the village board is adding more student commercial lodging houses, three houses, on the corner of church and Mulberry street, with enough toilets being added to really make a mess down the street by the rail trail. Furthermore, more toilet have been added up the line, so by the time the bathhouse opens, you won't be able to get to the park without stepping in a mess of stuff, let alone what backs up into the public restrooms. See the Villge Planning board and the Village Building Department for an explanation as to why they havent consulted with the Town over what raw sewage the village is putting in the Town and village park?

University students, high school skateboarders, mothers with baby buggies, joggers, elderly strollers, dogs of all sizes, shapes and breeds walk through this unseemly slime unawares. The sewer pipe itself was put in the ground in 1970, and keeps on leaking without repair and going into the park. This leaking of sewage into the park was first noted by the Riverkeepers in 2003, yet the village and town keep adding toilets to the line and are continuing to do so unabated and unchecked.

The Village has put in a new sewer pipe that will take the untreated foul matter further into the park on Church Street now. You can still see the straw that was thrown over the new grass seed on top of the filled in pipe. Of course, there are still 16 more toilets being added on illegally at the corner of Church and Mulberry, as well as a new house with more toilets being added on to this line across the Town/village line on Prospect Street.. On and on and on and...

The village replaced a pipe to put any overflow directly into Moriello Park's segment of Tributary 13 in the lower parking lot. In 2003, then Village Mayor said "If there is raw sewage of East Mulberry Street and also West Mulberry Street, we will have to take care of it. " (Poughkeepsie Journal, Friday, June 13,2003) Now, exactly nine years later to the day, not only is there raw sewage from the Town's end of Prospect Sgreet, past the pool, past the park, past the illegal rooming houses, and over to the other side of North Chestnut to the Rail Trail, and there is raw sewage running into Tributary 13 past the Tanning parlor, past Stewarts into the creek, but both the Village and The Town have added more toilets to the line, 36 to be exact, the town and village are planning more toilet additions to the line once again this summer, and the pool toilets haven't even opened yet. This sewer pipe was put in the ground in 1974, and hasn't been torn up and replaced even once. since then. That is abuse of a neighborhood, the population, destruction of public property, a health hazard, and everybody goes swimming in it (that is leaky shale rock that the pool sits in you know? Seeps all kinds of stuff, and the County Health Department said so, twice) As for the pool director, he wants to pave everything so the sewage will stay underneath the macadam and "Out of sight, out of mind." Good thinking.

The swimming pool toilets are overflowing the 1970 year installed sewer pipes in the street, which are made out of fired clay , broken and leaking. Nothing is the street is made out of PVC pipe, from uphill in the town neighborhoods all the way into the village historic district. How the village planning board is allowed to add more toilets to this defunct line is a matter for the county health department, which, was in town last night at the town board meeting to approve the dog parks, two dog pars, at the county fair ground but was not in the village to inspect the overflowing Mulberry Sewer Line. Amazing. Does Clix Fix notify the Ulster County Health Department as a matter of course when there is raw sewage about for people to have to try not to step in?

Has anything changed?

The site has been addressed and even though the road is caving in near the gas pipe, sewer overflow problems have been abated. Must be professionals around working on the pipes instead of the Village government's employees.
