Dangerous Intersection

It is impossible to cross Valley Street to go to Memorial Park. No one stops at the cross walk and when people do other cars just go around them. We really need a light there that would only be activated when someone want to cross the street

  • If you have concerns about transportation issue in South Orange,
send it to the transportation advisory committee, which
has a procedure for following up on such reports.
send it to the village engineer srenda@southorange.org
and cc the committee chair, Daniel.Peterson@arup.com.

  • I sent a message to the village via their website, with no response. I suggested they get the standing yellow pedestrian crossing signs, and sent some data regarding the success rate of those particular signs. If others are interested, I would follow up with the village in another manner, en masse.

  • I agree with all the comments above. Either add a pedestrian activated signal calling for cars to stop or move the park to a location that's easier to get to!

  • This intersection is both dangerous and inconvenient. I've also stood at this intersection for ridiculous amounts of time waiting to cross. In one particularly rare incident when the crosswalk actually said walk and no cars were turning- you think it'd be ok to cross the street- I ended up getting hit by a car that sped up to make a turn. Ridiculous.

  • In New Haven we added the yield to pedestrian signs at every unsignalized cross walk in the city.
    The difference is noticeable.

  • I agree with Elissa - this town is unfortunate enough to have the most self centered and awful drivers driving through it. I live a block away and have literally stood on the corner of 4th trying to cross valley for upwards of 5 straight minutes in the pouring rain with a screaming injured child and no one would let me cross. The lights at 3rd and by the HS are timed so there's ALWAYS traffic coming one way or the other and those lights are so far apart, drivers get up to a good coasting speed in between which probably lessens their 1% likelihood of stopping for a pedestrian, as the law requires. A light at the corner of 5th would surely help. We have trouble getting to the park across Valley on a weekly basis too b/c of the traffic
