I complained for many years about this intersection. I went to the board of education with my complaints & they sent someone out to investigate the area. My children ( while they were in middle & high schools) & other children received transportation via the school bus because it was deemed an unsafe intersection. I spoke with the person in the police dept. who ran the traffic division (at the time) & they said that there wasn't any "major" issues at this intersection & that there wasn't going to be anything done to remedy the situation. This has been going on for many years & unless there is some sort of petition or public outcry I feel nothing will change!

I can attempt to follow up with the traffic department; what are the suggestions you'd like to see passed along / considered for review?

1) I would suggest that the people in the Victorian house with the very high bushes (on the Ward Street side) trim and maintain their bushes to a height where people can see around the corners. This would help prevent people using them as an excuse for "not seeing that it's a 4-way stop".

2) Perhaps larger signs on all four corners and warnings.

3) Regular enforcement by police at that corner.

4) People don't obey the traffic laws for stopping and speeding at this intersection. I am also concerned that because people use it as an alternative thoroughfare to avoid traffic and lights on Main Street that they speed and may hit kids or adults crossing at the park and YMCA just seven houses down from the intersection.

5) Visibility is a major issue at that intersection. There are the high bushes, the fact that streets don't converge in a manner where they can all be seen and "perceived" as "an intersection", people's disregard for the signs that are there. It "appears" to be a quiet neighborhood, but is highly trafficked!

6) Children of all ages do walk, ride bikes, etc. in this neighborhood. It has a park down the street and a very active YMCA.. People should be made to not speed. Perhaps one of those electronic signs that measures speed and flashes it in big numbers may help. It should be placed there on a regular basis.

7) A traffic light wouldn't be out of the question for how busy this intersection gets! It would very clear and people couldn't question it. (Not that they should question the 4 way stop signs). I have seen traffic lights at intersections less "populated" with traffic (especially with violators). This would be a more permanent solution than to have police patrolling the intersection, have things improve for a short while, then to have us complain again or to have something happen in a cycle. That would make happier citizens and be a more permanent solution.

8) A tree in front of my house prevented a large pickup truck from hitting my house not too many years ago. The truck was flying toward So. Elm on Ward Street and couldn't stop.The tree had to be removed! I'm glad it was there! Something needs to be done!

9) The police could fill their coffers with all the violations they could rack up here!

Great feedback concerned citizen; I will print this out and get in contract with someone from traffic regarding this and your suggestions and see if I can't help move the ball forward

I was told that there would never be a traffic light put at this intersection (by the police dept) but, this may be the only solution to this problem. I'm not really sure what else can be done... Also, when I spoke with the officer he said that the police dept has posted a car to sit nearby & said there wasn't any issue. The problem is when anyone sees a police car they "behave". Thank you for taking the time to look into this ongoing issue.

I'm in much agreement with Mary. Of course people will behave when they see a squad car sitting there! Perhaps they should place a hidden camera there to check out the violators! Once people started getting ticketed left and right by that, there would be a change. Perhaps it's cheaper than a light. I don't know for sure. Just thinking and responding.

No this has not been changed or improved upon. Perhaps this is just a waste of time.

I did follow up regarding the intersection but I never did hear back from anyone. I can give it another try. I will try traffic maintenance and see if that is a better route to start from

I am the original poster. This is Mary Ellen Crawford. I have a feeling it may be too late to do something about it. I have seen a newer post by someone else on this.

I went by there on May 13 2014 and still the bushes block the view to the south (South Elm St] Even the Police see this problem and nothing is getting done to correct the problem. If there is an accident I can see a lawsuit happening. And the homeowner will be included in the lawsuit for not maintaing a safe view since the bushes are on their properrty. This is BS
