If the city cannot find alternative space for the encampment dwellers in Mosswood Park, the city needs to do a better job of keeping the area clean. Trash everywhere, piles and piles. There are now not one but two private cars that appear to be permanently parked on the sidewalk behind the amphitheater. The amphitheater is quite literally trashed (see pic). There was a knife fight yesterday that broke out in front of the Kaiser Pediatrics building that overlooks this mess. Reportedly it was encampment dwellers. Literally children witnessing the inability of adults to keep them safe and traumatizing them. Shame on our elected leaders to fail their community so poorly.

They have destroyed the west side of the park just like they did to the west side on Webster. Line locust going through a crown field. Nothing left in their swarming
Oakland City Council unanimously voted to approve the Encampment Management Policy, meant to “protect and serve all Oaklanders, sheltered and unsheltered, and to manage the adverse impacts of homeless camps by balancing the interests of all residents (i.e. unhoused, housed, business community).” In fact, this policy was intended to reinforce laws that are already in existence in Oakland, but that are not being enforced by the city.

It looks to me that this service request has been combined with a Homeless Encampment request. That tells me this request will be ignored. Why can't Department of Public Works clean around homeless encampments so that residents can comfortably use the park without fear of stepping on hazardous matter?

Oakland City Council unanimously voted to approve the Encampment Management Policy. Under the new rules, homeless people won’t be allowed to set up camp within 150 feet of a middle school, preschool or child care center, or within 100 feet of high schools, or within 50 feet from homes, businesses,
public PARKS and places of worship, or within 25 feet of a homeless shelter.
PWD dept employees are not trained to handle hazardous materials nor will there union let them. They cannot even deal with syringes or human waste. This has to done by a very expensive to the tax payers sub contractor. the crime scene clean up folks.
Currently our city leaders are to busy dealing with fixing world affairs at out expense???
Why can't DPW just clean up the trash in and around the park? When I complained to Councilmember Fife's office about the litter in the park, I was encouraged to Adopt A Spot.
I have be doing volunteer litter pickup for the City of Oakland KCOB program for more than 10 years. Its the only way our neighborhood stays some what clean. The City provides us with safety vests, bags, pick up sticks and a drop spot to put the bags of trash we remove. The city expects the taxpaying citizens to do the work sad.
