Remove the Open top Trash bin from the bus stop and replace it with a closed top (blue or whatever split/bin) that has a cover.
We had an open bin before for 5 years (2008-2013). Having it there was a disaster. All around this stop are bachelor apartment tenants who left their kitchen garbage at the bin, and since there is no collection on Saturday and Sunday, garbage piled up over the top, onto the lawn. The smell was horrific, and the skunks came. It was awful.
We also experienced car drivers throwing their daily bags of scraps at the bin, basketball style, without stopping to pick up the misses.
We have already picked up cigarette butts , plastic bottles and straws, as well as other scrap. Transfer this bin in to the laneway(Whitehorne Brookside) that is 150 feet to the south, and give us that bin. Otherwise, remove the open, no lid, trash can or I will.
Why am I upset?
Recall, garbage collection is once a week. In the morning, bachelor apartment dwellers leave their bags of garbage in the bin. In the afternoon, it is the students from John Grant school who leave water bottles, cigarette butts, etc. The bin used to overflow with trash.
Please note. (70 seconds) or 164 steps to the north, at Parkhaven is another bus stop. (I measured the steps). It is about 220 steps to the south to Melling. This bus stop is redundant. It is not necessary.
As a temporary measure, until a swap takes place, the existing bin should be emptied after 9am, and definitely on Saturdays and Sundays.
Bachelor dwellers have left for work or school before 9am. In summer, these bachelor apartment dwellers cannot keep trash in their dwellings for one week.
Our experience. An open trash-bin in the summer that was not emptied on Saturday and Sunday was overflowing, with garbage in the bin and on the ground. It was a disaster that forced us to have it's removal. We got skunks and groundhogs from having that open bin. When the bin was removed, the skunks and groundhogs disappeared.

Mr. Satenstein,
We are currently assessing the number of street cans and their location throughout the city. Ideally the city should be able to offer 2-stream units (recycling and garbage) with a lid in most bus stops and main streets.
Concerning the illegal disposal of household waste bags in public street cans, you can contact Public Safety Department for a complaint.
In regards to the bus stops location, you can contact the STM which is the solely agency having control over their placement.
The city offers 4-stream curbside collection:
Organic Waste on Mondays,
Recycling on Tuesdays,
Bulky/ CRD waste on Wednesdays,
Garbage on Thursdays.
All street cans are collected on Mondays and Thursdays between 8am - 6pm. They are verified on a daily basis and emptied if necessary. If exceptionally one street can overflows and becomes a nuisance over the weekend, you can contact Dispatch Service for an emergency pick up.
Regards,
Waste & Environment Division
