Tragedy of the commons. Please enforce the laws!

This city is covered in abandoned vehicles taking up space and a blighted appearance to our streets.
Why can't there be some sort of clean-up where the city can make some money off of these vehicles, unclaimed can be auctioned off or scrapped. Impound fees for those claimed. Something, anything is far better than allowing them to continue to accumulate as they are.

I believe that for those beneficial results to happen, we'd need a city government and a police department that listened to our citizens. That's hardly going to happen in Vallejo.

How many more times will this be brought to City Administration’s attention? How many times will they give the same old response? “Short on resources and manpower”.....
Frankly I don’t get it either. Wouldn’t tickets, fines and impound fees cover payroll for one or two parking/traffic enforcement officers? They have $$ to contract out to a company for the waterfront parking. Why not expand their patrol area?

But isn't that money needed to rebuild the new waterfront parking structure that's falling down.

This is only a few blocks from City Hall. Maybe those in charge should actually walk the street and see what it's like.

Please enforce the existing laws. Ticket the car squaters, parking violators.

But now we have it on the good authority of our police department that, if their licenses (and safety inspections) are only 6 months or less out of date, and if they move a couple of streets away (so that Public Works can get in and clean up their mess) every three days, the they are not breaking a law and protected from our complaints.

City employees walking on Vallejo city streets. You gotta be kidding me. It's rare enough to see police downtown in car. Don't expect any of them to get out and walk around.

Theo, I was told by police that as soon as your license tags expire you must remove your car from any city streets or be fine, towed or both. You don't even get the 72 hour rule that licensed cars get for parking on city streets. But yes our fine city government has decided to spend $500,000 for parking enforcement but only in the waterfront and downtown zones.

The city only cares about the downtown businesses and making it look good there, so tourists will come. All other areas are not policed, we pay with our property taxes, but then the city uses our money to fix up areas we don't use, I was thinking, how many times a year do I go to downtown Vallejo? Like once a month at most. But I go shopping and out and around the rest of the town every day. And there are vehicle and homeless issues everywhere I go and not addressed unless they are wielding a weapon. Why are we policing the areas that only the tourists and the business owners and the homeless use? I want the streets near my house, the parking lots at Walmart, CVS and the other shopping centers to be policed equally to all other areas.

Half a block from City Hall 4 vehicles never move, no plates, expired registration. Covered with debris from months of sitting. Also half a block away in Kissel Alley, 2 unregistered/unlicensed cars parked at the “No Parking Anytime” sign. None have ever been looked at by any type of enforcement.

Abandoned vehicles are the first sign of urban decay. And Vallejo has been decaying for years because VPD does not do enough to rid our streets of abandoned/inoperable/wrecked/unlicensed vehicles. if you have any doubts besides Carolina street, check out the 200 block of Lemon st or the 2000 block of Ohio st. Both locations are littered with inop unlicensed cars. They have been reported many times, not only by me, but other neighbors in those areas, to no avail.

I think it’s funny that this issue is left open by city officials. Perhaps they think it’s good therapy for us to have this forum of running comments. Lord knows they have no answer for this one.

FWIW: we met with the new City Manager a couple weeks back to voice some of our concerns about problems over here on Marin Street. He specifically mentioned during that meeting how shocked he was to see so many abandoned cars around Vallejo when he first arrived. His comments made it seem like this is going to be an area of focus for the city in the months ahead...fingers crossed.

He’s been in for eight months now, I’m not seeing any big changes.

Why has NOTHING been done here? STILL an OPEN issue for months now? DO SOMETHING CITY OF VALLEJO!!!!!!

Four months gone by now and nobody at City Hall has cared to respond, nor even to click on the "CLOSE AND FORGET" button. I wonder does this suggest that there some at City Hall who agree but who know that they have no power to enforce cooperation from semi-autonomous city agencies (the naming of whom would probably get this posting censored, but you know who I mean).

The only way to be heard at all in this town is to go to a City Council meeting and report the issue every 2 weeks when they meet. Perhaps they will get sick of you asking and embarrassing them at every meeting

Yes indeed, thanks Justine. It's only been six months (since this report, more like two years since the problem began), and the situation is only moderately worse.

Also thanks to our Mayor and City Manager, for the nothing they have done in the two months since Justine forwarded the report to them. This is the kind of service we've come to expect from our City Hall.

And finally, thanks to our city's law enforcers (As Seen on TV) for their consistent and disciplined effort to not live up that title.

PLEASE, someone kill/close this issue, it should be an embarrassment to the City Workers. By the way Justine, what did the Mayor's Office or City Manager have to say?

This is so ridiculously blatantly dysfunctional. Just one person in control of this matter could make a difference . Please replace whom is responsible for this problem. Contract it out or get it together. Money to be made here. Our representatives should be so ashamed of this if they have any semblance of intelligence.

Only? The 100 & 200 blocks of Carolina Street referenced in the original report are only one block east of the waterfront, and one block north of City Hall. What removes them from consideration? Could it be the ethnicity, income, or just the political donations of the of the residents?

Police often ignore these issue because they are understaffed. This falls on the City. Show up to City Council Meetings and voice your displeasure.

Compared to which other cities are the VPD understaffed? They certainly aren't underpaid!

Please be prepared to provide the following information:
- Vehicle make
- Vehicle color
- License plate number
- Location of the vehicle
- Info about why the vehicle appears abandoned

Currently, there is a backlog of reports on the abandoned vehicle list, and providing detailed information to ONE of the approved reporting tools will help the Traffic Division more efficiently investigate reports given their reduced resources.
