I agree this is a problem. There may be a simple fix.

Street has become very popular as a traffic cut-through by Uber, Lyft, good sized trucks, commuters and others. Really ought to be one-way with travel permitted heading north. My car has also been damaged while parked on the street during the past year.

Further traffic calming on Linnaean is needed! I live in the neighborhood and have witnessed an increase in speeding and reckless driving on this street, which many drivers seem to treat it as a highway. In addition to collisions, there is little regard for cyclists on the road.

One salution to try would be to get the navigation apps Google maps, Waze, apple maps etc. To take Hurlbut off there thru route directions. So they would only direct the use of Hurlbut if it was the start or destination of the trip.

That's a drastic step that may not bother you but may bother other neighbors. What about just putting a sign at the Linnaean end of Hurlbut saying no through traffic. Or not during rush hour.

Can you explain further? It seems one way in Martin Street would discourage traffic down Hurlbut, Bowdoin and Avon - these streets would be pleased. Do you fear that the traffic would build up outside your house waiting for the lights?

What about a stop sign midway through the straight section, perhaps at Avon/Avon Hill st., which is by the school?

If Martin Street were one way from Mass Ave, there would be more pressure to change the traffic light settings Linnaean/Mass Ave which are already unfavourable for those exiting Linnaean.

Thanks for your report. As described, Hurlbut St is an yield-street (where motorists must yield to oncoming motorists in order to pass each other). Because of the nature and narrowness of yield-streets, drivers must drive slower to negotiate the street, unlike one-ways.

The Traffic Department can review the possibility of changing this to a one-way street if it does not negatively affect the existing roadway network and the vast majority of the abutters of Hurlbut St are in favor of the change.
