Westbound traffic on Fountain Street is often backed up to Whalley Avenue in the afternoon because the crossing guard will stop traffic each time children are boarding a bus from the sidewalk in front of Sheridan School. Since there is a cutout for the buses to park in and the children appear to exit the school only when they are ready to board a bus, can westbound traffic be allowed to proceed even as buses are being boarded?

Despite the cutout, all vehicular traffic must stop whenever childern either enter or exit a school bus.

Something needs to change! This is a very high traffic area and the school is a HUGE hinderance on traffic. This was very poorly designed and it seems like no one took into consideration the impact this would have on traffic when they designed this thing.

Another NIGHTMARE morning...getting through this area is IMPOSSIBLE at 9am! What happens? People reroute into the neighborhood, at high speeds and running stop signs to go around this disaster putting MORE people at risk.

DO SOMETHING before a pedestrian gets run down or a car accident happens!

Obviously this is still a problem. I live not far from the school, and everyday, without fail around 3pm, cars are blaring their horns at the buses / cars. I am talking at least 5 cars for about 20 minutes. I don't know if people don't know why cars are stopping, and that is why they are honking, or whether they are honking at the buses. Either way it is ridiculous!

And the traffic waiting in the afternoons and mornings to go for these buses is STILL ridiculous....they line up all the way down the street because they cant move because of the buses! ABSOLUTELY ridiculous!!! Who ever did the planning for this school did a horrendous job! Take out the islands so that you can make some good lanes to be able to keep traffic flowing around the buses - put an island between traffic and the bus lane!

The Alderman on that side, Lehtonen, and I will have to chat with NHPS's transportation folks and the principal over the summer

How are people more concerned with buses delivering kids to a top notch school in our city than the fact that almost every comment talks about cars passing school buses or how to make it easier for cars to do this illegal act? The safety of children and other pedestrians must come first! I too live in the area and drive and have noticed an improvement this school year with buses now parking on both sides of Emerson street on Fountain instead of the double parking mentioned. There is also at least one or more security guards or school personnel outside encouraging the safe,orderly unloading of buses and then moving them out so the waiting buses can move up to the inlet and unload. The occasional bus is parked longer usually to discuss a problem that occurred on the bus.The principal is also very open to concerns...she only asks that complaints are accompanied by ideas for solutions.

You are completely missing the point. This isnt about "one" bus and the issue of trying to pass it...its the fact that its a ROW of buses that tie up traffic for a LONG period of time then just a pick-up or drop-off on a major vein of traffic. All of the buses cant even fit in the small area so they get backed up and stall traffic while they weight for the front buses to move on.

The solution? Remove the islands between the two traffic veins and install one between traffic-up-Fountain and where the buses would pull over to deposit the children.

This will keep the kids safe - considering they get off the same side of the bus that they directly enter the school and allow business traffic to continue to flow.

I live in this area myself and I have to drive all the way down and around just to avoid this cluster-heck-hole. Which, come to think of it, how smart is that to encourage major traffic to reroute into a neighborhood instead of using Fountain?

Who ever designed this building really didn't think things through at all...the best solution would have been to deposit the children in the BACK of the school. But alas, this is what we are left to deal with...a dangerous mess.
