This intersection should be an embarassment for the NHPD. There is a "No Turn on Red" sign coming off of Crown onto Howe yet NO ONE obeys it. Everyone turns right on red.
Actually I'm not sure why this intersection should be "no right on red" since drivers on Crown turning right have a clear view of traffic coming up Howe St and can make the right on red without problems. The bigger issue seems to be drivers on Howe who run the red light they have at that intersection. I used to work in a building at that intersection and every single day I saw cars on Howe running that red light, often with police nearby doing nothing about it.
Acknowledged By CTLS. Red light running and other control violations are a major concern of community groups throughout Connecticut, and responsible for hundreds of serious crashes every year.
"No right on red" signs are routinely ignored because there are far too many of them in New Haven and drivers don't understand why they are there. The city should review its policies and remove the ones that serve no purpose.
I've lived in various New Haven n'hoods for 25 years, and the reality is: pedestrian beware.
As for "No Turn on Red": what % of drivers can't even read (or read English)?
Every pedestrian should be ready to dodge cars at any time.
I wholeheartedly agree. I was struck by a vehicle which ran a ran light on North Frontage and my car totaled; I had to go to physical therapy for over 6 mos and still am not back to normal. Now I ride my bike and am witness to so much more of this craziness. Literally (to use the word properly) every day I see at least one car running a red light, on both legs of my trip - and I live 8 blocks from work!
Having lived in seven states (including urban Texas and California) and three countries, I can honestly say CT- and NH in particular- is the WORST about folks running red lights.
I agree with Sarah, this often happens right in front of NHPD, what gives?! If I submit footage to them as evidence are they required to pursue it?
